What are GTINs used by Google Shopping?

GTIN is simply a newer acronym (coined by GS1) and stands for Global Trade Identification Number. It describes numbers that have existed in retail since the 1970s.

The Google Shopping GTIN comes in one of three types: GTIN-12, GTIN-13, or GTIN-14.

•  UPC Codes (GTIN-12): These are the retail barcodes used on products in North America

•  EAN Codes (GTIN-13): The retail barcodes used on products everywhere else
    •  JAN Codes (GTIN-13): The Japanese name for an EAN Code

•  ISBN Codes (GTIN-13): The retail barcodes used on books

•  SCC-14 or ITF-14 (GTIN-14): The barcode used on cases or pallets

Do I really need a GTIN for Google Shopping?

The answer to this question is a bit tricky. It may not be required for all case but not having it will likely have a negative impact on your listing. The bottom line is that you definitely should use a proper GTIN (meaning UPC, EAN, or ISBN Codes; depending on the product).

Here is what Google has to say about it:
“A GTIN uniquely identifies your product. This specific number helps us make your ad or unpaid listing richer and easier for your customers to find. Products submitted without any unique product identifiers are difficult to classify and may not be eligible for all Shopping programs or features.”

What types of GTIN-based Barcodes does Google Shopping use?

Google Shopping uses UPC codes (North America), EAN codes (all other countries), ISBN codes (books), and SCC-14 / ITF-14 Barcodes (Master Cartons/Pallets).

How are GTINs for Google Shopping different?

The GTIN for Google Shopping is no different from those used on other products. The whole purpose of the system is to have unique product identifiers that are applicable and unique across the entire retail chain. If your product already has GTINs (barcodes) on it then you do NOT need to get a special separate GTIN for Google Shopping.

For those of you who need only UPC numbers (GTIN-12) for selling your product on Google Shopping but do not need the digital UPC barcode images, we offer a special 15% OFF on your UPC Numbers. Click here to go to the online order form & get 15% OFF by using the promo code NUMBERSONLY.

EPS Format - This layered, vector EPS file is the preferred format of most graphic designers due to its quality and versatility, particularly for resizing. EPS is an "exchange" format, not necessarily associated with one specific graphics program. An exchange format is one intended for multiple applications to be able to open.
TIFF Format - This raster TIFF file is not suitable for significant resizing. It is popular among graphic artists.
JPEG Format - This uncompressed, high-quality JPEG file is the most common file format. All computers can open a JPEG. However, it is not suitable for resizing.
